INTERNSHIP POLICIES

Internships in the Communication Department are ordinarily open to advanced students who have six hours or more completed in the area in which the internship will occur. Some exceptions to that rule may be made by the Department when an opportunity exists for a student which may not be available at a later date.

Internships are usually granted for three or six semester hours. It is usually advantageous to the student to take two internships of three semester hours each rather than one of six semester hours. Two, three hour internships, usually give the student broader and more varied experiences and less repetition normally occurs than when the student interns in a single place for six semester hours. For each semester hour of credit, it is assumed that the student will put in between thirty-nine to forty-five hours of work. Thus for a three semester hour internship it is necessary to work 120 hours.

It is the responsibility of the student to arrange for the internship with institutions or individuals.  The Department may be able to identify contact people for students desiring internships.  A list of possibilities are available here and recent announcements are posted on the Communication Department bulletin boards.

For a student to receive credit for an internship, the Communication Department requires the following:

1.  Enrollment in the University in an internship course, COM490 for a three semester hour internship for COM        491 for a six semester hour internship.

2.  Completion of the required number of hours indicated above.

3.  A daily log of activities in which the student is engaged during the internship.  The log should include the date, the number of hours worked, and a brief description of the activities in which the student is engaged.  The log should be presented to the faculty member who has been appointed to serve as the student's advisor for the internship three times during the course of the internship.

4.  A written report of no less than ten type written pages containing specifics of what the student has learned from the internship is required.  Sentences like "I learned a lot about ethic", should not be used unless the are followed by examples of what was learned about ethics.  If a paragraph or so is written each day of interning, the paper will be very easy to complete.

5.  An evaluation from the person to whom the student reports at the internship location along with an evaluation from the student.

Remember, three logs, a ten page term, and an evaluation from the person in charge of the internship and an evaluation from the student must be received by the faculty advisor.  A grade of "F" may be reported if the above criteria is not met before final grades are submitted.
