Curbstone Press Internships

Curbstone Press offers an internship program to provide training in a range of publishing activities for college students and graduate students expressing an interest in a career in publishing.  Various programs can be set up to meet the individual needs of the student, and sophomores and juniors in college are encouraged to apply as they can benefit most from a program of long term study in publishing.  For 3 credits, interns work on site for 10 hours a week.  For 6 credits, interns work on site for 20 hours a week.  Preference is given to those students who choose the six-credit option and who intend to follow up the internship with an independent study in some phase of publishing.  Since the internship calls for concentrated and intense work, students should carry no more than a 15-hour load (including the internship credit).  Students are required to apply for the internship the previous semester before the registration deadline.

Interested students should contact their advisors or Curbstone Press directly to arrange interviews.

The initial internship begins with a general overview, students working at a variety of tasks. Usually by the second or third week, the intern has identified a particular area he or she would like to focus on.  In addition, each intern is assigned a forthcoming book to follow through the various stages of publishing, from editorial work to marketing. Some specific areas interns participate in are:

  • Editing -  Interns may serve as first readers for manuscripts, make readers’ reports, and assist in editing and proofreading manuscripts.
  • Typesetting, Layout, and Design - Interns will assist in typesetting on the Apple Macintosh Desktop Publishing program, designing and laying out pages in preparation for book production. Interns design and produce Curbstone’s newsletter (Curbstone  INK), as well as special and local newsletters.
  • Marketing and Promotion - Interns will be involved in sending out advance notices and page proofs to reviewers, designing ads, developing press kits, arranging authors’ tours, and developing direct mail ad campaigns.
  • Subsidiary Rights - Interns will help place excerpts from forthcoming books in magazines, investigate mass-market right, film or TV rights, and correspond with foreign publishers for foreign rights.
  • Special Areas - In consultation with the Curbstone staff, interns have the opportunity to develop special projects based on their own interests and skills.
  • Please keep in mind that these are not writing internships. The majority of the tasks will be marketing related.
