W-Swimming: Balance Sparks Win

Five individuals combine for six first-place finishes in home-opener

smoragiewicz head raw_5131.JPGWILLIMANTIC,Conn. - Five different individuals combined for six first-place finishes as the Eastern Connecticut State University women's swim team opened its dual-meet season Saturday afternoon with a 142-97 victory over Western Connecticut State University at the Sports Center Pool.

 Sophomore Amanda Rivers (Meriden) won the 50 and 100 yard freestyle events, senior Nadine Menard (Woodstock) captured the 200 butterfly, sophomores Becky Odgers (Shelton) and Michelle Schapp (Torrington) the 1000 freestyle and and 500 freestyle, respectively, and freshman Kayla Smoragiewicz (Norwalk) the 100 backstroke.

Eastern swimmers claimed the top three spots in two individual events and  at least three of the top four in all 12 individual events. The 200 medley relay of Rivers, first-year junior Jen O'Leary (West Suffield), sophomore Colleen King (Barkhamsted) and sophomore Erin McVeigh (Windsor) opened the meet with a one-second victory and the 200 freestyle relay of sophomore Marissa Colley (East Haven), Schapp, McVeigh and Rivers was the fastest at the finish by just over two seconds on an exhibition basis in the  final event of the day.

Two sophomores  equally split Western's six first-place finishes. Katherine Meerman, last year's Little East Conference Rookie Swimmer-of-the-Year and LEC winner in the 100 and 200 backstroke and 500 freestyle, captured the 200 freestyle and 200 backstroke and 100 butterfly Saturday, and Danielle Leprine claimed Western's other three firsts in the 100 and 200 breaststroke and 200 individual medley.

Eastern visits Massachusetts Dartmouth Saturday for a noon start.
