Hewett and Hultzman are recognized as athlete of the week
NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. - Eastern Connecticut State University juniors Fredrick Hewett (New London) and Lauren Hultzman (Putnam) have been recognized with a weekly honor in the sport of track and field by the Little East Conference in its first weekly awards program of the indoor season.
Hewett, a second-year letterwinner, was named male track Athlete-of-the-Week and Hultzman, a third-year participant, was selected female field Athlete-of-the-Week. It is the first weekly honor of the indoor season in the careers of both athletes.
In the first meet of the season Saturday at the University of Massachusetts Boston Invitational at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center, Hewett qualified for the New England Division III Championships for the second time in as many years in the 400 (51.07) and 60 (7.20), outrunning a field of 25 in the former event. He was also fifth in a field of 65 in the 60. It was his second individual title in the 400 in his two-year career as he also won at Coast Guard last Jan. 28.
At UMass Boston, Hultzman qualified for the New England Division III Championships for the third time in as many year with a leap of 5-2 1/4 - less than one inch shy of the program record which she shares - in claiming second place in a field of 23. Hultzman was one of three competitors to jump 5-2 ¼, with Leah Potter of Tufts winning on jumps. In the meet, Hultzman was also 11th in the long jump (14-11 ½) and ran the preliminaries of the 60 hurdles.
Hultzman was last year's Little East Conference and New England Alliance high jump champion and achieved All-New England honors in both the Division III and Open meets.
Under the direction of head coach Kathy Manizza, Eastern competes in the Yale University Invitational Saturday at 9 p.m. at historic Coxe Cage.
