W-Swim: Warriors Dominate WNEU

Warriors record fastest times in 12 of 14 events in 151-103 victory

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. --  Senior Julie Pietrycha (Newington), junior Erin McVeigh (Windsor) and sophomore Kayla Smoragiewicz (Norwalk) all won two individual events as the Eastern Connecticut State University women's swimming team routed Western New England University, 151-103, Wednesday evening at the Sports Center pool.

On the brink of its second straight one-loss season, Eastern (7-1) officially was credited with ten first-place finishes and also swam the fastest times in two additional events while competing on an exhibition basis. The win was the ninth straight for Eastern over Western New England (4-5).

Pietrycha won the 100 (1:18.88) and 200 (2:47.63) yard breaststroke, McVeigh  the 100 (57.07) and 200 (2:06.01)  freestyle and Smoragiewicz the 100 individual medley (1:07.03) and 50 backstroke (30.26) and swam the lead leg of the 200 freestyle relay (1:48.77) which clocked the fastest time on an exhibition basis.

The Warriors took the top three spots in the 50 and 100 backstroke, 100 freestyle and on an exhibition basis, the 200 individual medley. Eastern also went 1-2 in the 200 medley relay, 100 individual medley, 200 freestyle, 50 butterfly, 50 freestyle and 200 freestyle relay (on an exhibition basis).

Additional individual champions were juniors Becky Odgers (Shelton) in the 100 backstroke (1:06.40), Colleen King (Barkhamsted) in the 50 butterfly (29.06), and Michelle Schapp (Torrington) in the 50 freestyle (27.01) and freshman Heather Avery (Wethersfield) in the 500 freestyle (6:00.82). Junior  Marissa Colley (East Haven) swam the fastest time (2:24.05) in the 200 individual medley on an exhibition basis.

Eastern swimmers recorded a total of 11 personal bests and 14 fastest times in the meet. Swimming their fastest times of the season were Colley in the 100 freestyle and 200 individual medley, Schapp in the 100 butterfly, Smoragiewicz in the 50 backstroke and 100 individual medley, Odgers in the 200 individual medley, junior Mackenzie Russo (New Milford) in the 100 individual medley, sophomores Rachael Thatcher (Newington) in the 100 and 200 freestyle and Morgan Charlow (Branford) in the 100 backstroke, and freshmen Rachel Borden (Milford) in the 200 freestyle, Kenna Jones (Simsbury) in the 50 and 100 backstroke, and Macaire Jones (Danbury) in the 50 butterfly. 

Eastern looks for its second straight 8-1 regular season when it hosts Rhode Island College Saturday at 11 a.m. in the regular-season finale.
