In non-conference match, five-time defending NEWLA champ breezes

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University women's lacrosse remained unbeaten on the season as the Bears downed visiting Eastern Connecticut State University, 14-4, Tuesday evening at Swenson Field.
Bridgewater (4-0), which has won five straight New Englnd Women's Lacrosse Alliance (NEWLA) titles and qualified for eight post-season tournaments in the last 14 years, scored the first four goals of the game and held a commanding 12-1 lead at the intermission as Eastern (2-4) was outshot by a 2-to-1 margin and lost 11 of 14 draws over those first 30 minutes.
The Bears held the Warriors off the board for a stretch of over 34 minutes in the 60-minute match, when they scored the final eight goals of the first half and the first of the second to push their lead to 13-1 two minutes into the second half. The Bears slowed the pace for the remainder of the contest before Eastern finally answered with three goals in 6+ minutes inside the final 11 minutes.
Junior attack Erin Conn (Moriches, NY) paced Eastern with a pair of goals, while classmate Ashley Wolk (Barrington, RI) tallied four draws, two ground balls and two caused turnovers to go along with an assist.
Sophomore attack Riley Cachelin, the Bears' leading point producer, led all scorers with three goals and three assists, while junior attack Melanie Appleman notched three goals and a pair of helpers. Junior midfielder Taylor Clancy had a terrific all-around game as she finished with three goals and an assist to go along with five ground balls, three controlled draws and one caused turnover.
Freshman midfielder Lauren Geary, ranked fifth nationally with an average of 8.67 draws per match, won eight of her team's 14 draws.
Eastern opens its Little East Conference season Saturday at Rhode Island College at 1 p.m.
