The Eastern Connecticut State University men's and women's soccer teams have been ranked among the Top 10 in the first NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division III New England polls of the 2013 season, released today. After the first week of the regular season, the Eastern women opened at No. 8, while the men are rated No. 10 as the only Little East Conference institution to open in the regional rank. Among conference institutions, the University of Massachusetts Boston was rated No. 6 in the women's poll. The women won both of their contests by shutout in this past weekend's Warrior Classic, downing Saint Joseph (CT), 2-0, and Fitchburg State, 4-0. Under the direction of seventh-year head coach Greg DeVito, the men followed a 3-0 loss to Widener with a 3-3 overtime tie with Swarthmore at the Swartmore College Garnet Alumni Classic. The men have returned seven letterwinners from a record-breaking season a year ago which found them going unbeaten in their first 15 matches and finishing 17-2-1. The men were ranked either fourth or fifth in all ten New England polls last year and either 24th or 25th in the final sixth regular-season national polls. The women, coached by 14th-year head coach Chris D'Ambrosio, have returned 14 letterwinners from last year's 9-6-3 team which shared the Little East Conference regular-season title. The women were not ranked last season. The men, the pre-season LEC favorite, open their home season Saturday at 1 p.m. against Bridgewater State at Nevers Field. The women compete in the Manhattanville College Valiant Classic Friday and Saturday.
