But don't wait until September to get started! Save your money this summer so you can join History Professors Caitlin Carenen and David Frye on an amazing journey to Israel and Jordan next January. Trip dates are December 28, 2013-January 6, 2014. You will register for HIS 470 and 471 for Wintersession 2014. The cost of the trip is approximately $3,500.

Highlights include touring Jerusalem; spending a night in a Bedouin desert camp after four-wheeling in the desert; visiting a Palestinian refugee camp; visiting the Israeli Holocaust Memorial; visiting Tel Aviv and climbing Masada; and floating in the Dead Sea!

"Reverse Internship" Will Convert "Banked" Applied Learning into College Credit

The Lumina Foundation estimates that in order to meet the demand for educated employees the United States needs to raise the percentage of adults with a college degree from 38 percent in 2010 to 60 percent by the year 2025.

"Capitalizing upon the idea that working adults have 'banked' valuable applied learning through their work," says Carol Williams, associate dean for continuing education, "we will offer working adults a way to turn that learning into meaningful college credit through a 'reverse internship' concept. Individuals will be able to convert their prior learning into college credits equivalent to a standard practicum or internship that will be usable toward degree requirements at Eastern."

Eastern is currently creating an interactive "reverse internship" tutorial to be incorporated into our Credit for Lifelong Learning (CLL) program. Student "competency statements" will be an essential part of the "reverse internship" model. Students selected in the fall participated in a January CLL Portfolio Development workshop that incorporated the new "reverse internship" tutorial. Portfolios that were due at the end of January are being assessed by the faculty.

A benefit of the program is that it will decrease the cost of completing a bachelor's degree at Eastern for students participating in the program by 6-9 percent. Anyone interested in the "reverse internship" should contact Joanne Melody ( melodyjo@easternct.edu ), coordinator of the program for the School of Continuing Education at Eastern.

Sandy Hook Memorial Free Concert

More than 200 singers and orchestra members from more than 20 ensembles across Connecticut, including Eastern Connecticut State University's Concert Chorale and Chamber Singers, will combine to present a memorial concert on Jan. 13 at 5 p.m. at St. Joseph's Church at 99 Jackson St. in Willimantic in honor of the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy. The public is invited. Admission is free; however, donations will be collected at the door.

The concert, organized by David Belles, professor of music at Eastern, will present Faure's "Requiem" and other selections. Eastern's Chamber Singers and members of Guilford High School Chamber Singers will also perform "There Will be Rest" by Frank Tichelli. Some of the groups performing include Willimantic-based Renaissance Revival; Norwich Diocesan Choir; Concert Choir of Northeastern Connecticut; Vernon Chorale; Mystic River Chorale; Greater Middletown Chorale; E.O. Smith High School; Guilford High School; Hartford Gay Men's Chorus; Hartford Chorale; Hartford-based CONCORA AND VOCE, two professional choirs; Storrs Congregational Church; St. Mark's Chapel; and the Storrs and the Putnam Congregational Church.

Eastern Performing Arts Professor Anthony Cornicello will compose a work for organ to be dedicated and premiered during the concert, and the Willimantic-based Thread City Brass Quintet will perform prelude music.

The School of Continuing Education at Eastern has Global Field Courses going to France, London and Paris, London and the Lake District, Nepal, and Florence.

The School of Continuing Education at Eastern, working with many of Eastern's academic departments, offers Global Field Courses (GFC) throughout the academic year. A Global Field Course at Eastern is a one to five week-long experience carrying Eastern course credit, taught in part or entirely on-site in a location away from Eastern.

Study Tips: Test Taking

The optimum retention of information occurs when you study for a test after the first day of class and a little bit every day thereafter. If you didn't do that, here's what you can do.

1. Put together all your materials for reviews, notes, charts, glossaries, corrected assignments, corrected tests and quizzes.

2. Make sure you have scheduled enough time to study for each exam.

3. Take advantage of the tutoring services at the Academic Services Center

4. Go to any review sessions, ask questions about anything you don't have a clear understanding of, ask what will be on the exam--it can't hurt. Take any additional handouts meant as study guides.

5. Always attend the last class prior to the exam. There may be items mentioned then that you'll need to focus on.

6. If you belong to a study group, set up practice quizzes. Discuss everything that could be on the test.

7. Create a study sheet checklist to go over important information and then check off each item as you review them.

8. Remember to eat just enough before the exam, so you will have energy.

9. Remember to go to the rest room before the exam.

10. Try to get a good night's sleep prior to your final.

11. Set two alarms so you will wake on time. Place these alarms beyond your reach, across the room.

12. Arrive at the room for the test at least five minutes early.

Study Tips

- The syllabus is your key as to when tests happen, deadlines for assignments and projects, and contact information.

Studying From Notes

- Take your notes for a course and do the following:

- Keep all the notes for one course in the same notebook and number the pages.

- Highlight terms and definitions in yellow.

- Highlight questions and answers in yellow.

- If you see something you do not understand, highlight it in pink--that means you will ask a question about it on the next day of class.

- When you do get that answer, rewrite the question with the answer and highlight in yellow.

- Return to the page where that question was highlighted in pink, checkmark it, and put the page number of the answer.

- Draw a yellow box around case studies and examples of problems.

- Every time you take notes from a class, try to spend at least 30 minutes reviewing it.

Studying from the reading

- Keep up with the reading

- Be sure to insert these notes with the appropriate section of study in your notebook so you have consistency.

- Take notes and write down questions on anything confusing from class

- Highlight those notes same as above

- Pre-read the next reading assignment to prepare for class

- Write up questions on anything confusing

- Make charts, tables, and diagrams of information to study

- Take notes in margins of the book

Writing assignments and projects

- Read carefully and write them out as if they are a test

- Do as soon as they are assigned. This gives you extra time if you need to ask the professor additional questions.
