Eastern Rugby Team Makes Playoffs

ECSU RUGBY 2009.JPGEastern Connecticut State University's Rugby Team will be playing on Saturday, October 31, 2009 at 1 p.m. against Colby-Sawyer College (New London, NH) at the Windham Tech Field in the first round of the New England Rugby Football Union (NERFU) playoffs.

The team went 5-0 during the regular season after defeating Rhode Island College (67-0), WPI (19-15), Connecticut College (37-0), Nichols College (17-14), and Framingham State (57-10). Eastern placed first in their division.

It is the first time in the Rugby Team's five year existence that they have gone undefeated and the first time that they have made the playoffs. If the team wins the first round, they will host the semi-finals game on Saturday, November 7. Should they win the semi-finals, they would advance to the championship game on Saturday, November 14 in Newport, Rhode Island.

Captain Phil Cyphers said "we were ready to come and win games. Last year, we were one game away from the playoffs and that led us to coming out with the mindset of winning and winning big. This team has incredible unity, both on and off the field. We hope that everyone at Eastern comes out Saturday as our fans have given us a big boost during the season."

The Rugby Team is a recognized club of the Student Government Association at Eastern. To learn more about the Rugby Team, please go to the following link.
