I am Melissa, a Psychology major here at Eastern! I am also a Summer Orientation Counselor (SOC). I am entering my senior year here at ECSU but I can still remember my own orientation experience, which is probably because it was only last summer...That's right, I was a transfer student, I came to Eastern as a junior! Right out of high school I was unsure of what path I wanted to take in life therefore I decided the best route for me was to not attend a four year college right away. Instead I enrolled at Naugatuck Valley Community College (NVCC), which I like to refer to it as my stepping stone. There I learned how to not only expand my mind but also to be more willing to try new things and make new friends. While I was going to school as a Behavioral Science major, I also continued to work at a local nursing home. Taking on the roles of both a student and an employee changed my original plan of being able to obtain an associate's degree in two years. After three years at NVCC, I graduated with my associates and also decided the next best step for me was to take a year off to work full-time. My family, mainly my mother, stressed the fact that most people who take time off from school usually don't go back. I personally do not like being like "most people", so during my year off from academics I began to look at schools and apply.

My friend Mike, who happens to Head SOC this summer, showed me around Eastern after my tour of Central Connecticut State University. I thought I was torn between the two, but after telling my mom about my experiences at both schools she pointed out that I was more excited and enthusiastic when talking about Eastern, so here I am at the school that is the best fit for me, hopefully just like it will be for you. Perhaps you chose a similar path and went to a community college first, or maybe you went to another four year school and realized it wasn't the best fit for you. Regardless of your situation you are here now and I can tell you from experience that you made the right choice! Eastern does a good job at making the transition smooth for transfer students. Eastern makes every effort to place you in a residence hall with other transfer students who are going through the same transition. My roommates and I found this feature very helpful; it was reassuring to know we were not alone dealing with adjustments of everyday life on campus. We found that a great way to bond and get to know the campus better was to take part in the weekend activities that are put on by CAB and FAD, the events they put on definitely made the weekends more entertaining and enjoyable (so make sure to keep your eyes out for fliers around campus!).

The best advice I can give incoming transfer students is to, GET INVOLVED! To do that, make sure you attend the club fair which on Tuesday, September 10th, 2013 on the Student Center patio. It's a great opportunity to see what the campus has to offer, whether it is a club based on an interest of yours or something you've never tried before. Another tip I have for you is to get to know your advisor and professors! They will provide great assistance to you for advice, networking or writing you references. Building a relationship with faculty members is definitely important and they are more than willing to do so. Even just stop by their office during their office hours and say hi! Remember that your professors are here to help you! I hope you find this information somewhat helpful and relatable! You're transition here to Eastern will be a great experience! Good luck to all Warriors!
