Student Government Association Elections Timeline Announced

The Student Government Association is looking for candidates for the upcoming spring elections. All interested students are invited to attend an informational meeting on March 15, 2010 at 3 p.m. in the Student Center in room 115. At this meeting they will receive more information about the election process and the rules and regulations of campaigning.

Applications are due on April 2nd and must be submitted to the sgaelection@stu.eaternct.edu email account by 5 p.m. The qualifications to run for the various positions are listed below:

• Senator- must have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher
• Executive Board Member (with the exception of President) - been a member of the senate for one full semester OR served one full semester as President or Vice President of an on campus student organization that has been around for at least 2 years, have a cumulatve GPA of 2.5 or higher, and have 60 completed credits by the time of elections
• President- been a member of the senate for one full semester
• Board of Trustees Student Representative: have a cululative GPA of 2.67, achieved 45 credits
• Senior Class Committee: President, VP, Secretary, Treasure, Senior-at- Large (2 positions) - anyone interesting in running must be a Senior in Fall 2010, a full time student and have a cumulative GPA of no less than 2.0 There are also 3 Junior-at-Large positions. Students interested in running must be a Junior in Fall 2010, a full time student and have a cumulative GPA of no less than 2.0.

Applications will be accepted on April 5th at the SGA meeting at 3 p.m. in Student Center 107. After the candidates have been announced campaigning will begin. A meet the Candidate Hour will be held on April 7th in the Student Center lobby at 3 p.m.

Pride Room Opens in Student Center

On February 18, 2010, Eastern Connecticut State University officially opened the new Pride Room on the first floor of the Student Center in room 109. The purpose of this new resource room is to provide a welcoming environment and advocate for the LGBTQA (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Ally) community. Anyone can be an ally and through future events it is the hope that more allies wll be gained through education and understanding.

During the opening, there were several speakers who shared their perspectives. President Elsa Núñez spoke passionately about the importance of the new space and emphasized that it should be seen as a starting point for those in the LGBTQA community at Eastern. Ken Bedini, vice president of student affairs also expressed his support and commitment to the mission of the Pride Room. SGA Vice President Corrine King, alumnus Jennifer Paradis, Professor Lula Blocton and Professor Cara Bergstrom-Lynch all articulated the importance of the Pride Room to the student body and how it shows progress within our society that this room has become a reality.

There was clear support from people who attended the ceremony shown by way of signatures on a banner that commemorated the occasion. Many more individuals have visited the room since the opening and left messages of support and acceptance. This was all made possible due to the dedication, work and support from administrators, faculty, staff and students. The Pride Room is now open so look for events being organized in the near future and feel free to check out the room!

Eastern Outdoors Club Conquers Okemo

On Sunday, February 28, 2010, the Eastern Connecticut State University Outdoors Club conquered Okemo Mountain in Ludlow, Vermont. Starting their day at 6 a.m., 12 members of the Outing Club had seven hours of mountain time. The conditions were perfect for skiing and boarding; warm, party sunny and miles of trails. Students who went only paid $20.00 which got them a lift ticket and rental. The Outing Club's next trip is to Wachusett Mountain in Princeton, Massachusetts. To get involved with the Eastern Outing Club, come to meetings on Wednesday at Noon in the Science Building, room 132. The club strives to inform and educate the Eastern community with events and activities that promote outdoor adventure while observing an environmental ethic.

Competitive Cheerleaders Finish Strong

The Competitive Cheerleading Squad at Eastern Connecticut State University have competed in several competitions in recent weeks. On Saturday, February 7, 2010, the Cheerleaders were involved at the Torrington High School's 4th Annual "Compete for a Cure" Competition. Eastern's squad was awarded first place in the college all-girl division and was named runner up grand champion out of 15 teams.

They also competed in the Chief Challenge on Saturday, February 13, 2010 at Nonnewaug High School finishing in second place ahead of Central Connecticut State University and Western Connecticut State University. The squad will try to build off of the these strong finishes with three more local competitions before heading to the College National Championships at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina from March 20-22, 2010.

Students in Clubs and Organizations Average a 3.00 GPA!

Students who participated in a Student Government Association recognized club or organization during the Fall-2009 semester at Eastern Connecticut State University achieved better in the classroom than those who did not participate. The 1132 students who were registered as participants averaged a 3.00 grade point average compared to a 2.86 grade point average for those students who did not participate.

Students who were involved outperformed their peers in every academic class highlighted by the freshmen class attaining a 2.92 GPA in comparison to a 2.63 GPA for those freshmen who did not participate in a club or organization. The information below illustrates the difference in performance.

Whether you are a new incoming student or a returning student to Eastern Connecticut State University this fall, one thing is clear - students who get involved in organized clubs and organizations excel better than their peers in the classroom.

Students have choices in clubs and organizations that are as diverse as the student body. At present, choices include a wide variety of academic clubs including those focused on accounting, advertising, marketing, economics, education, history, pre-law, pre-med, psychology, and public relations. There are sports clubs including bowling, rugby, cheerleading and a variety of dance and step teams. Leadership opportunities are abound with organizations including habitat for humanity, people helping people and a variety of community service based organizations. There are also special interest groups that are wide-ranging including the entrepreneurs club, outdoors club, organization of Latin American students, and many others.

Information on the web site indicates the process on how to get started. Rugby Team Falls Short in Championship Game

On Saturday, November 14, 2009, the Eastern Rugby Team fell short of their undefeated season when they lost 10-0 to the Golden Bears of Western New England College in the New England Rugby Football Union (FERFU) Division IV championship game.

While Newport, Rhode Island is often seen as the epitome of beauty, the conditions at Fort Adams State Park were anything but ideal. Heavy winds combined with a steady rain throughout the morning made for muddy and difficult conditions to handle the ball and move up the field for the Warriors. The first half ended in a 0-0 deadlock, an unusual position for Eastern's team who averaged 43 points per game previous to Saturday's match. WNEC scored twice early in the second half and it was a deficit that the team was not able to overcome.

SGA sponsored a student bus to the game and a number of Eastern fans braved the weather to salute their team on a great season. The team's spirits were high despite the disappointment of finishing short of their ultimate goal. Congratulations to the team for a fantastic run!

Eastern Rugby Faces Western New England College in Championship - SGA Sponsoring Buses to Game

The Eastern Rugby Team has reached the championship match of the New England Rugby Football Union (FERFU) Division IV playoffs after a decisive 54-5 victory against Merrimack College this past Saturday at Thomas Nevers Field.

A few weeks ago, the Rugby Team earned its first playoff berth in its short five year history. By improving this past week to 7-0, the team has the opportunity to end its playoff run with an unblemished record and the championship.

The championship game will be held on Saturday, November 14, 2009 at Noon in Newport, Rhode Island at the Fort Adams State Park. The team will be facing Western New England College (Springfield, MA). Eastern's Student Government Association is offering students the opportunity to attend the game by sponsoring two buses. The buses will be leaving the Student Center parking lot at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Students can reserve seats at the Information Desk in the Student Center. Reservations are first come, first serve and you will need your University ID when you sign up in the Student Center.

Eastern Rugby Team in Semi-Finals on November 7, 2009

On Saturday, October 31, 2009, the Eastern Connecticut State University Rugby Team defeated first round opponent Colby-Sawyer College (New London, NH) by the score of 50-7. With the win, the team stays undefeated on the season and improves to 6-0.

As the top seed, Eastern will host the semi-final match in the New England Rugby Football Union (NERFU) playoffs against Merrimack College (North Andover, MA) on Saturday, November 7, 2009 at 1 p.m. at Thomas Nevers Field on Eastern's campus.

The winner of Saturday's match will advance to the finals in Newport, Rhode Island at Fort Adams State Park on Saturday. November 14, 2009.

Eastern Rugby Team Makes Playoffs

Eastern Connecticut State University's Rugby Team will be playing on Saturday, October 31, 2009 at 1 p.m. against Colby-Sawyer College (New London, NH) at the Windham Tech Field in the first round of the New England Rugby Football Union (NERFU) playoffs.

The team went 5-0 during the regular season after defeating Rhode Island College (67-0), WPI (19-15), Connecticut College (37-0), Nichols College (17-14), and Framingham State (57-10). Eastern placed first in their division.

It is the first time in the Rugby Team's five year existence that they have gone undefeated and the first time that they have made the playoffs. If the team wins the first round, they will host the semi-finals game on Saturday, November 7. Should they win the semi-finals, they would advance to the championship game on Saturday, November 14 in Newport, Rhode Island.

Captain Phil Cyphers said "we were ready to come and win games. Last year, we were one game away from the playoffs and that led us to coming out with the mindset of winning and winning big. This team has incredible unity, both on and off the field. We hope that everyone at Eastern comes out Saturday as our fans have given us a big boost during the season."

Funding Request Packets Released

The Budget and Management Committee (BAM) of SGA is now releasing the Funding Request Packets and related information for the Spring of 2010. All SGA recognized clubs must submit their FRPs by Friday, November 13, 2009 at 8 p.m. This is the official process for all clubs and organizations to request funding for the upcoming semester. Any money given to the club for the current semester will be wiped clean from the budget account as of the end of the fall semester.

On the BAM home page, you will find the online funding request packet (this is the only format that is now accepted) as well as the timeline for the FRP process and changes made to the request process, the BAM guidelines and parameters, and Instructions on how to fill out the FRP. Please review all materials.

In addition to the above materials, a program on "How to Fill Out Your FRP" will occur on Monday, November 2, 2009 at 3:00 pm in the Student Center Theatre. We strongly recommend that anyone who has any questions on the process attend this program. Please RSVP if you or any one from your club/organization would like to attend as space is limited.
